Electric Cars: The Summer Challenge and Beyond

Summer is a challenging time for EV owners, especially when it comes to managing range and charging efficiency. However, during peak summer with temperatures soar to 40°C which leads to a drop in efficiency by about 10%. This is a common issue reported by many EV owners, as extreme heat can significantly impact battery performance.

Welcome to Q Po India! In this blog, we delve into the real-world experience of owning and driving an electric vehicle (EV) during peak summer months. We’ll explore everything from range and charging impacts to the convenience features that make electric cars a unique driving experience.

The Challenges of Public Charging Stations

One of the drawbacks of EV ownership is the occasional inconvenience of public charging stations, particularly in terms of slow charging speeds.

Multiple issues with charging sessions disconnecting abruptly, likely due to excessive heat. This highlights the need for better infrastructure and more reliable charging options, especially in hotter climates.

That said, slow charging at public stations does have its benefits, especially if you have access to one near your workplace. You can safely leave your car charging for extended periods without worrying about overcharging, although it does require some planning and patience.

The Convenience of One-Pedal Driving

One of the standout features of my EV is its single-pedal driving mode, which makes urban driving incredibly convenient. This mode allows for strong regenerative braking, meaning the car slows down significantly as soon as you lift your foot off the accelerator, without needing to use the brake pedal.

We experiment, During our daily commute of 20 kilometres each way, We’ve found that we can complete the entire journey using just the accelerator pedal, making for a smooth and controlled driving experience. This feature is particularly useful in slow-moving traffic, where constant acceleration and deceleration can be tiresome.

Air Conditioning: A Summer Essential

Another useful feature in EV is the adjustable Auto AC, which manages airflow and temperature effectively even in peak summer. This is a favorite feature for us, as it ensures a comfortable cabin environment no matter how hot it gets outside. However, the car's interface for controlling the ventilated seats could be more user-friendly, as it currently involves navigating through multiple screens, which can be inconvenient while driving.

Running Costs: Affordable, But Not Without Compromises

From a financial perspective, the running costs of our EV have been reasonable. A recent public charging session cost around ₹1,650, translating to a running cost of ₹3.69 per kilometer. This is much cheaper than petrol or diesel alternatives, but there are some trade-offs in terms of convenience, particularly for long trips.

The rear charging port on our car is another point of convenience, especially when parking in tight spaces. Additionally, the car's regenerative braking system helps extend the range slightly, though it’s most effective in specific driving conditions.

A Comfortable Ride, Even on 20-Inch Wheels

Despite the large 20-inch alloy wheels and low-profile tires (255/45 section), the ride quality of our EV has been impressive. The suspension system handles both low and high speeds comfortably, and we haven't faced any significant issues with punctures, which is a testament to the quality of the rubber.

Range Anxiety: A Common Concern

Range anxiety and charging concerns are common among EV owners, especially for those who plan to use their electric car as a primary vehicle. While our EV meets most of our daily needs, the thought of taking it on a long road trip is still daunting. Planning for charging stations and dealing with their limited availability can be stressful compared to the ease of finding a petrol station.

For those with home charging options, this anxiety is less of a concern, but it's still something to consider if you frequently travel long distances.

Conclusion: Is an EV Right for You?

Overall, our experience with an electric car has been positive, with some reservations. The convenience, low running costs, and eco-friendly nature of EVs make them an attractive option. However, for those considering making an EV their primary car, it's important to weigh the pros and cons, particularly in terms of range and charging infrastructure.

We’re now looking forward to upgrading to a luxury EV to see if the experience justifies the additional cost. For now, this car has been a great introduction to the world of electric vehicles.
